Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, traditional values quietly endure, preserved through the skillful hands and enduring love of craft of generations. Wishing to bring students closer to national history and culture through vivid experiences, Hanoi Adelaide School organized a “Journey Back in Time” experience for Grade 4 students at Chuong Village – the cradle of the famous Chuong conical hat making craft.

Here, HASians had the opportunity to learn about the traditional craft village through a passionate sharing session by artisan Thu Huong. From the history of the village’s formation, the cultural significance of the conical hat in Vietnamese life, to the meticulous and patient steps involved, the story of Chuong conical hats opened up a very different world before the students.

Beyond simply listening, 4th-grade students directly participated in the 7-step hat-making process under the guidance of artisans. From selecting and ironing the leaves to arranging the molds and finishing the hat, each step brought excitement and curiosity. In particular, the hat-decorating activity became a highlight, with each hat bearing a distinct personal touch, reflecting the creativity and unique feelings of each HASian.

The trip not only helped students understand more about a traditional craft village but also fostered a love for national culture, appreciation for handcrafted labor, and the enduring values of the past. “Going back in history” was therefore not simply a field trip, but a vibrant lesson – where history was touched, felt, and preserved in the childhood memories of HASians.
