A truly unique learning experience, where clear, pure sounds sparked the curiosity and joy of discovery in the first-grade HASians. Through the experiential activity “Learning Sounds, Playing Melodies,” the children had the opportunity to enter the world of traditional music – where each instrument carries within it a cultural story and the spirit of their homeland.
Beginning the journey, HASians visited and learned about the musical instruments of the Kinh ethnic group and 53 other ethnic groups. From the deep, resonant sound of the bầu lute and the full, round sound of the nguyệt lute, to the unique instruments of the Central Highlands and the northern highlands; each sound captivated the children, who listened attentively.
Not only did they observe, but the students also directly experienced making musical instruments. From simple bamboo tubes, HASians crafted drums and decorated bamboo flutes with vibrant colors. In addition, assembling parts of the moon lute, zither, and T’rưng instrument using paper, cardboard, and foam helps children better understand the structure of musical instruments, while also developing dexterity and coordination skills.
The experiential journey concludes with the children enjoying traditional Vietnamese musical instrument performances by artists. The melodies, sometimes lively, sometimes profound, tell stories of Vietnamese culture and people, instilling in the children a love and pride for traditional music.
Through the “Learning Sounds, Playing Melodies” activity, Hanoi Adelaide School aims to provide first-grade students with a vibrant learning experience; where they learn by listening, by creative hands, and by emotion. Each sound produced is not only a joy during the day’s experience but also the first seed nurturing a love for art and national cultural identity in the hearts of each student.
